Cabana Boys, BBC Style & Guest blogging

More than a couple of people have mentioned that I should do Cabana Boys from across the pond, specifically from the various BBC shows. Now, I don't pretend to know all of the shows, but I have a more than passing familiarity with a few and with the lovely boys who populate said shows, so, why not?

One of my first favorites was lovely, lovely Lloyd Owen. I first decided I loved the gorgeous eyes and equally gorgeous speaking voice when he played Young Indy's father on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Imagine my glee when he showed up on BBC Scotland's Monarch of the Glen as long-lost bastard brother Paul. Seemed like people were mostly hot for Archie (Alastair Mackenzie) but oh no, I liked Paul. What's not to like?

As Henry Jones, Sr. & a shot from Monarch.

I haven't seen this show yet, but I've heard it's a lot of fun. The new BBC Robin Hood. Jonas Armstrong does make a fetching Robin of Locksley.

And thanks to [info]carrielofty she alerted me to the very lovely Richard Armitage, who portrays Guy of Gisborne. Mmmm... makes a girl go "Robin Who?"

I first saw this guy on the Fox/BBC hybrid show, Fast Eddie. I don't even like redheads and overall, he's kind of goofy looking, but OMG, the speaking voice just makes me go... GUH (No surprise he does a lot of voiceover work, no?) And his character, Monty, was absolutely incorrigible and really brilliant, in a subversive, dry English humor sort of way. Plus, he is cute, in a very pale, redhead manner.

We'll start with the current Doctor, David Tennant, who reminds me of an oversized elf. In Chucks and with a really absurd dress sense. Seriously, he's worn some of the butt-ugliest outfits on the red carpet I can ever recall seeing. And that's saying something. But he's sooooo adorable and funny. And with a beard, surprisingly rough and tumble sexy. What can I say? I have odd taste.

Then there's Torchy and OMG, what a pretty cast top to bottom, women included. (Although, wahhhhhhh *viewers will know what I'm wailing about*) But look at them, they're gorgeous and unique, every last one of them.

But this is about the boys, and the boys, they are pretty. Burn Gorman and his cheekbones:

Gareth David-Lloyd of the pretty, pretty eyes. He makes a lovely Boy, no?

And of course, the Head Boy in Charge at Torchwood, the sublime and completely inappropriate John Barrowman.

And just to leave you with one of my favorite shots of pretty... John and James.

ION, I'm guest blogging today over at Romancing the Blog on how a book's birth can be compared to the gestation period of the elephant. Seriously. No, I'm not just a little loopy these days.

Oh, now I want to watch TV--only where will I get the time?

And here I thought you'd simply want to start swimming... *g*

Yes! That's the ticket! Then I won't have to find TV-watching time!

I think I better get my morning tea. (And find my rubber wings.)

I'm *still* wah-ing over Torchwood! And John Barrowman is just so *YUM*!!!

I know, I know. But... at the same time, from a storytelling perspective it was an amazingly right thing to do. I'm dying to find out what they're going to do next. I think there are going to be some really interesting character evolutions as a result (or should be if the writers don't get their heads stuck in unmentionable places).

I know exactly what you mean. And I think it was not only "right" but very gutsy of them to actually do it. Why do they need time off between seasons, anyway??? I want more NOW!

Oh yes. Torchwood is for all the win that has ever been won.

Ianto = Wanton Welsh Sex god, Y/Y/hell Y?

ETA: Amen about Tennant's clothing choices. Maybe he should just, yanno, let the Dr. Who costume people dress him on a permanent basis.

Oh hell to the yeah on Torchwood.

And I'd love to take Ianto out behind the woodshed and show him a little what's what.

(That was my out loud voice again, wasn't it?)

BWAH!

I just love that Ianto is so...versatile. Lisa, Jack...whichever...

A woodpost...

Quite versatile, yes, is our lovely Ianto. *g*

You should make Tennant talk in his normal voice.

He has a really lovely Scottish accent.

I learned this on Graham Norton. I learn many things on Graham Norton. Including the fact that Stephanie Powers still looks damn good.

I've seen interviews of him where he uses the brogue and snippets of the episode where they meet Queen Victoria and he pulls out a super exaggerated version of the brogue which had me laughing like mad.

Oooh, excellent Cabana Boys! You didn't mention that ever since the play where he appeared nude, Tennant's unofficial nickname has been "David Ten-Inch." *w*

And then, of course, John Barrowman met his partner right after a performance of Rope (co-starring Alexis Denisoff and Anthony Stewart Head!) in which Barrowman was naked onstage for about 10 minutes. Apparently, a mutual friend brought Scott backstage and introduced him to John, who turned to see Scott and thought, That's who I'm going to spend the rest of my life with. Is that a romance-novel meeting or what? *g*

(And my icon is from the outtakes of Torchwood episode 1x12; Barrowman is dipping Matt Rippy, who played the original Captain Jack.)

(Oh, oh, oh! Someone did Doctor Who/Torchwood credits, Love Boat-style -- GENIUS!)

Oh

My

GOD

I am sitting here giggling like a little girl. I just called my husband at work and basically said, "You know how we're always saying that there are people with way too much time on their hands and thank God for that because we get to see the benefits of their work?"

I've heard the story of how Scott and John met and yeah, it's completely adorable. I can just see him being all stars in his eyes. (Sort of like the icon *g*)

And I had not heard that the genesis of David's nickname was from a starkers stage appearance, but I did see this earlier today, which also, had me giggling like a little girl. *g* Lots of giggling today.

Am I the only one who likes Wire in the Blood's Ronson Green?

Um... not anymore. I just looked and lord almighty, does he have a Sean Connery as James Bond sort of look to him.

Have I ever mentioned that Sean was always my favorite Bond? *g*

The latest incarnation of Robin Hood unfortunately has not much more to offer than eyecandy. I tried watching the first two or three episodes and the blatant historical inaccuracies (just because Shakespeare has an anachronistic striking clock does not mean everybody else can have one, too) and general silliness were just too much for me. Too bad because there actually was an interesting take on the legend somewhere in there.

Regarding Torchwood and Doctor Who, both shows feature indeed some very fine looking men. And they're excellent actors, too. John Barrowman is just stunning and the natural charm of him and David Tennant does a lot to conceal the fact that both Jack and the Doctor are not very pleasant characters. Ianto doesn't do much for me physically (too young), but he could clean my flat anytime. And Burn Gorman is not only the best actor and very qurikily pretty, he also plays the best character. Jack may be dashing and handsome, but Owen is the real catch. He solves more cases than anyone else, is funny, sarcastic and tender when it counts and unlike Jack would do anything to protect his teammates.

In fact, Owen and Gwen were my favourite characters in season 1. They had such great chemistry and the relationship between them was much more touching and had so much more potential than the much touted Jack and Ianto relationship (though that one had its moments as well).

Which is why I disliked season 2 so much, because Gwen and Owen barely interact anymore. Gwen suddenly pretends she loves the deeply unlikable Rhys (who really should not have survived season 1) and even is engaged, though the relationship was dead by the start of season 1 and carried some very unpleasant undertones. Initially I hoped they'd go for a last minute rescue at the altar, but when they missed three excellent opportunities to get rid of Rhys in the first five episodes I realised that they were probably going to go through with it. And then I saw spoiler pics of the horrible indignities visited upon poor Gwen.

Meanwhile Owen forgets that he ever had feelings for Gwen, is sidelined in favour of Martha (who was okay in Doctor Who but has no place in Torchwood), ignored and treated badly by Jack (nothing new there) and apparently pushed towards a relationship with the dull and increasingly annoying Toshiko, even though they have zero chemistry. Jack still acts like a jerk towards his team with less excuse than in season 1, James Masters was wasted and even Ianto had unlikable moments.

I still haven't found the heart to watch beyond episode 5, but unless the person who accidentally spoiled the end of season 2 for me was maliciously lying, something really horrible and permanent happens, which I know I'll hate. I cannot imagine any justification either, especially since it's pretty clear that there never will be a season 3, since the BBC has not made an announcement yet, actors have been publicly disgruntled and Torchwood is usually filmed from May to November, i.e. now. And if there ever is a season 3, I predict that most of the original cast will be replaced and that Martha will join full-time to bring the show more in alignment with Doctor Who.
