Your Score: Midsummer Night's...
You scored 26% = Tragic, 51% = Comic, 41% = Romantic, 36% = Historic

You are A Midsummer Night's Dream. Blending elements of comedy and romance, A Midsummer Night's Dream tells the story of mischievous fairies who conspire to make everyone fall in love with everyone else, often with disastrous, yet humorous consequences. You are most likely haphazard in love, but good natured and friendly. While you may also have a mischievous side to you, it is most likely all in good fun. We have no doubt that you are an outgoing person, who may also be a bit of a klutz. And while you may not always get it right, you always try to do the right thing. We applaud you!

My darling Cindy Holby hath tagged me. Six facts. Okay, I'm going to have a hard time coming up with something, but let's see. Oh, and I don't tag, so them's what are interested, consider yourselves tagged. *smoochies*
The rules:
a) Link to the person who tagged you.
b) Post the rules on your blog.
c) Write six random things about yourself.
d) Tag six random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs.
e) Let each person know they've been tagged by leaving a comment on his/her blog.
1. I will take a good, simple creme brulée or a perfect chocolate dipped strawberry over the most elaborate, extravagant dessert.
2. Speaking of dessert, I love strawberry and peach ice creams, but they have to be fresh.
3. I've only dated a man older than me twice. (Not for lack of trying, mind you. Just never worked out for whatever reason.)
4. If I never see another female figure skater grab her skate blade and pull it to or over her head again, it'll be too soon.
5. I've missed most of the cult/watercooler shows of the past fifteen years. But I do have a tendency to know most of the pertinent facts because of my incurable People Magazine habit.
6. I no longer have the natural lenses in my eyes. Eight years ago, my eyesight had worsened to the point where I had to have lensectomies in both eyes—it's essentially cataract surgery.
Anyone who wants to answer, go for it.

![]() You are sophisticated, modern, and high class. Your taste is refined, but you are not picky. You are often the first to try something new. You are dominant and a bit over powering at times. You're so brilliant, you have trouble letting anyone else be in charge. While people respect you, they find you to be withdrawn and aloof. You love the feeling of accomplishment. You enjoy doing what's important. You feel lost when you have to do frivolous tasks or hang out with shallow people. |

Well, not totally nothing, because this is me we're talking about. I have to do laundry and figure out which bills need to be paid as I emerge from the haze of Deadline Fog. The laundry is especially important because the rugrats are on their Spring Break and we are headed in a matter of days for a few days at the Happiest Place on Earth, so clean skivvies are definitely a must. And remembering whether or not I actually have a bathing suit that I'm willing to wear in public.
And because I'm me, the Girls in the Basement don't care one whit that I'm emerging from Deadline Fog—they've assaulted me with two new story ideas, one a straight up romance, which I'm sure I'll manage to screw up, and the other a YA. Never mind that I have Between Here and Gone to get back to. *glares at Girls*
So I sit here, in my pajamas, with my coffee and contemplating the laundry. (*shudder*) So I'll do a meme. Gakked from Various and Sundry around my flist.
Music meme: List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs.
In no particular order, other than #7, which is currently my favorite song on the planet.
1) Spell- Maríe Digby
2) Mercy- Duffy
3) Nara- E.S. Posthumus
4) Lola- Chayanne
5) No Te Pido Flores- Fanny Lu
6) Billie Jean (Studio version)- David Cook
7) Butterfly (Casa Nova session)- Jason Mraz
I adore his wordplay and he's got such a solid music sensibility. To quote
debg I'd do him in Macy's window.
Curl your upper lip up and let me look around
Ride your tongue along your bottom lip and bite down
And bend your back and ask those hips if I can touch
Because they’re the perfect jumping off point of getting closer to your
Butterfly
Well you float on by
Oh kiss me with your eyelashes tonight
Or Eskimo your nose real close to mine
And let’s mood the lights and finally make it right
But you don’t fold, you don’t fade, you’ve got everything you need
Especially me
Sister you’ve got it all
An acoustic radio station performance. Can't wait for the full CD version which is apparently totally sexed up with some major jazz horns and percussion.

Back on March 15, Cliff Burns took matters into his own hands when he couldn't find a publisher for his dark fantasy novel So Dark the Night by releasing it as a free e-book on his site.
Well bless his proactive little heart. You have to admire that kind of giddy up and take the bull by the horns and whatever other cliché you want to throw in there attitude. Although, of course, the cynic in me wonders a) how many publishers did he query? and b) why did they turn it down? But that's just me being cynical, I understand this. Just because I've known authors who've considered receiving one rejection as proof that the industry doesn't understand them and doesn't get their brilliance.
*ahem*
Okay, never mind. He queried over sixty-five editors. I guess then where my cynical little brain goes is, "Well, why did they pass?" There are simply so many variables that go into a rejection and honestly, I get sheer desperation and anger and frustration, hence the self-pub route.
However, Burns couldn't leave well enough alone, ranting on his blog,
"The fact that I've been forced to publish it myself to my mind reveals something seriously fucked up in the publishing biz. How could they let this one slip through their fingers? It's got everything going for it: funny, attractive leads, supernatural demon spawn galore..."
Erm... whoopsie.
Dude, is publishing fucked up? Oh yeah, and you'll hear it here, among other places and loudly and for many other reasons. However, whatever potential fabulousness your novel may contain, (and I'm giving you serious benefit of the doubt here because I don't read dark fantasy and am not any kind of an arbiter of what's good or not) it's never a good idea to extol one's virtues by dint of utterly dissing the industry of which you want to be considered a part. You let your readers do that for you. You allow the download numbers to speak for themselves. You don't go publicly calling people with whom you might possibly find yourself in a working relationship, the "C" word.
Bad, bad, bad. Bad form, bad manners, bad business sense, bad all the way around. And big, neon example of rampant ego run amok. Because seriously, if the book was THAT good, it would've been published. Or will be. We all know of really great books that haven't yet made it to print for various reasons, usually linked to the weirdness that is the business of publishing. It's simply not a book's time.
WARNING: If you follow the GalleyCat link to the story, be aware that Burns' blog post is reprinted along with the "C" word, so if your work filters have fits with that, you might not want to click.

| You do not experience strong, irresistible cravings and consequently do not find yourself tempted to overindulge, however you are sensitive about what others think of you. Your concern about rejection and ridicule cause you to feel shy and uncomfortable around others. You are easily embarrassed and often feel ashamed. Your fears that others will criticize or make fun of you are exaggerated and unrealistic, but your awkwardness and discomfort may make these fears a self-fulfilling prophecy. You get overwhelmed by too much noise and commotion and do not like thrill-seeking activities. You prefer familiar routines and for things to stay the same. You can tend to feel uncomfortable with change. You are willing to take credit for good things that you do but you don't often talk yourself up much, however you are not adverse to confrontation and will sometimes even intimidate others to get your own way. You have strong will-power and are able to overcome your reluctance to begin tasks. You are able to stay on track despite distractions. |

I spent nearly two hours chatting with teenagers. It was a lot of fun, if incredibly exhausting. Several of them want to be writers, God love their little souls. I was cheerful and supportive and didn't even tell them to find something a wee bit more stable, like... Hazardous Waste Engineer.
And I get to do it alllll over again tomorrow.
I had this silly idea I was going to work when I got home. The horrendous traffic and blinding thunderstorm slowed me down a tad, hence the only thing I was good for once I got home was kissing the munchkins, making a cuppa, and lying in bed with mindless television. Then I discovered that my lovely CP tagged me with a meme.
This should be easy, right?
Yeah, I have tapioca where my brain should be. Let's see what dribbles out.
You’re feeling...exhausted. See above.

On your mind: Revisions and a possible new story idea. Yeah, I know, shut up.
Last meal included: Wendy's #1, no pickle, no onion. Remembered why I just don't do fast food burgers anymore.
You sometimes find it hard to... have confidence
The weather: Dark, about 65 degrees.
Something you have a collection of: cookbooks
A smell that cheers you up: Coffee
A smell that can ruin your mood: Burnt popcorn
How long since you last shaved: This morning
The current state of your hair: Loose, for I am rather lazy
The largest item on your desk/workspace (not computer): The stand under which the laptop lives when it's acting as the hard drive and on which RITA lives and glares at me when I'm procrastinating.
Your skill with chopsticks: Decent
Which section you head for first in a bookstore: New releases and/or YA
Something you’re craving: Time, quiet, and the phone to quit ringing (Mom...)
Your general thoughts on the presidential race: Yeah, so not going there.
How many times have you been hospitalized this year: None
Favorite place to go for a quiet moment: My bedroom with its foofy feathertop and comforter. If I'm in Miami, the beach.
You’ve always secretly thought you’d be a good...performer.
Something that freaks you out a little: The idea of writing a story out of order.
Something you’ve eaten too much of lately: Peanut butter M&Ms
You have never... done something completely wild, crazy, and completely out of character.
You never want to... regret not having done something completely wild, crazy, and completely out of character
Apparently, I am supposed to tag. Yeah, right. We know that's not happening. Take if you like.

But it's still early and I've got good coffee. A thought occurred, however—the two nights prior, I took a muscle relaxer at bedtime and I'm wondering if that had anything to do with the disintegration of my mood. Remember—big lightweight when it comes to meds, which is why I so rarely take them. Didn't take one last night and this morning I'm feeling marginally better, if a bit more sore than the last couple of days. That's okay. I can live with sore. Sore doesn't make me want to go on a rampage and smite everything in my path. At least, not as a general rule.

Gakked from Carrie Lofty, who in turn, nabbed it from elsewhere. Anyhoo...
Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews?
Any Oprah Book Club selection as a general rule. Way, way too sheep-like with the mentality and even though many of them have won awards and garnered fabulous reviews, given that Oprah's chosen them, the likelihood that they'll be depressing as hell is also high.
If you could bring three characters to life for a social event (afternoon tea, a night of clubbing, perhaps a world cruise), who would they be and what would the event be?
Hmm...Maggie DeLoach from Anne Rivers' Siddons' HEARTBREAK HOTEL, Bridget Jones, and Claire Fraser, from OUTLANDER and I think the event should be a beachside luau. With Cabana Boys.
(If it's going to be male characters, I'm going to just say one, Roger Mackenzie and I'ma not tellin' what I'm gonna do with him...)
(Borrowing shamelessly from the "Thursday Next" series by Jasper Fforde): You are told you can't die until you read the most boring novel on the planet. While this immortality is great for awhile, eventually you realize it's past time to die. Which book would you expect to get you a nice grave?
Crime and Punishment.
Come on, we've all been there. Which book have you pretended, or at least hinted, that you've read, when in fact you've been nowhere near it?
I don't know that I've ever done that, unless it was maybe a book for school that I had to read and just couldn't stomach. Oooh... if it's a school book, then I know which one—Lord of the Flies. Bleah.
You're interviewing for the post of Official Book Advisor to some VIP (who's not a big reader). What's the first book you'd recommend and why? (If you feel like you'd have to know the person, go ahead and personalize the VIP).
Hmm... someone who's not a big reader? Honestly, I'd probably recommend either A Wrinkle in Time or The Witch of Blackbird Pond. They're YA/Children's books that are infinitely readable but they're not in the slightest bit dumbed down and they have so many layers that the books remain fresh even after repeated readings.
A good fairy comes and grants you one wish: you will have perfect reading comprehension in the foreign language of your choice. Which language do you go with?
While I'm fluent in Spanish, I don't read it enough that it comes easily to me, especially with comprehension with respect to colloquialisms, so I'd love to have that. (I suppose I COULD read more often...) Otherwise, I think I'd love to be able to read fluently in French.
A mischievous fairy comes and says that you must choose one book that you will reread once a year for the rest of your life (you can read other books as well). Which book would you pick?
Heartbreak Hotel by Anne Rivers Siddons. I do that already anyway with this book.
I know that the book blogging community, and its various challenges, have pushed my reading borders. What's one bookish thing you 'discovered' from book blogging (maybe a new genre, or author, or new appreciation for cover art-anything)?
I've learned how important good cover art can be for getting a reader's attention. I was always SUCH a reader, that the cover mattered little to me. I was back cover blurb girl, followed by a page or two from the beginning and if you hooked me, you hooked me and I could care less what the cover looked like. Kind of a shock to discover that there are a lot of readers out there who put a great deal of their initial stock in the impression the cover leaves on them.
That good fairy is back for one final visit. Now, she's granting you your dream library! Describe it. Is everything leather bound? Is it full of first edition hard covers? Pristine trade paperbacks? Perhaps a few favorite authors have inscribed their works? Go ahead-let your imagination run free.
Yeah, you know the library in My Fair Lady? Two stories, balcony, winding stairs, vaguely circular room, ceiling to floor books, squooshy leather chairs, big, ornate desk?
THAT'S my dream library.
Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews?

Horrorscope for today:
Virgo Horoscope (Aug 23 - Sep 22)
Perhaps you have reached a phase in your life when work starts to lose its prominence. Of course, you must be dutiful enough to meet your responsibilities or everything could fall apart. But in order to do something extraordinary, you might have to push your own personal envelope and take a risk. Talk about your fears now, for it will be harder to deal with them later.
Talk about my fears? Ha. How much time d'you have?
Looking through my closet the other day, I realized I have writeritis with respect to the contents. At one end of the spectrum, I have a passel of sweats and tees, way over at the other are cocktail/formal dresses. Not much in the middle. So I've been trying to bridge the gap a bit more with some daytime dresses and everyone and their mother is having a decent sale, so I bought these:

Ought to get me through conference season, especially since I'm going to so few of them this year, relatively speaking.

![]() You have a very distinct personality. And if you're not being sweet, you're a little hard to take. You're a bit overpowering, especially in one on one situations. And while you are very dominant, sometimes your power is needed and appreciated. You can liven up a dull situation, and you definitely bring a fresh outlook. You are a bit of an acquired taste, and you tend to grow on people over time. People feel refreshed and rejuvenated after spending time with you. |

Poor
ocvictor is big with the sickies today, yet still managed to bring forth a hysterical meme (admittedly, cribbed from other sources) but this is a good one.
Go to this convenient compilation site right here http://longboredsurfer.com/charts.p hp and find the five years you were in high school. For each year, admit to the song that was your favorite at the time, then decide which one you now generally consider to be the best song on the list. Lastly, pick the year's worst song, snarking optional.
Okay, I actually only had four different years where I was in high school. In Dade County in the 80s, high school only went sophomore through senior years. Anyhoo, here we go. (I fully expect this to be terrifying.)
1982:
Favorite then: It's kind of a tie. Jack and Diane- John Mellencamp. Completely epitomizes that first year of high school for me and Hard to Say I'm Sorry by Chicago appealed to my seriously romantic adolescent self.
Best now: Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic- The Police. It's tough, since J&D still stands the test of time and I still love it, but one of my other favorites from that year is the one I consider to be the best now. (Although I will also admit to singing along with Don't Stop Believin' whenever it comes on the radio.)
The Worst: Oh, there are just sooooo many to choose from. Soft Cell, Flock of Seagulls, Air Supply; songs like I've Never Been to Me and Pac-Man Fever. *SHUDDER* But the winner here is definitely Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks.
Goats bleat more melodically than she does. Seriously.
1983:
Favorite then: Allentown - Billy Joel. I loved that whole album (and yes, I had it on vinyl, shut up). It's just such a great, great song.
Best now: She's a Beauty- The Tubes. I am nothing if not consistent. This was also a HUGE favorite for me in '83. The Tubes Outside Inside is the soundtrack of my first year in drum corps, along with Billy Joel's Nylon Curtain and Innocent Man albums. (Okay, cassette tapes for tour.)
The Worst: Oh, again, so much to choose from, but here there's no doubt which song wins. The Safety Dance- Men in Hats. It's a bad song. A bad video. Bad, bad, bad on the level of taking funny mushrooms gone bad, bad.
1984:
Favorite then: Let's Go Crazy- Prince. Still my favorite Prince song EVAR. I will still get up and go rockin' around the house when this pops up on iTunes.
Best now: Missing You- John Waite. Again, appeals to my exceedingly romantic self. Back then, it was the perfect song by which to sit in bed, writing in my journals. These days, it's the perfect song to write highly emotional scenes. Why I didn't know earlier I was going to be a writer is a mystery. All the signs were there, really. And again, I am nothing if not a creature of habit—I still love this song. John released a very nice remake as a duet with Alison Krauss last year.
The Worst: Man, I had some serious clunkers during my high school years. As tempting as it is to just put down Yah Mo B There (James Ingram and Michael McDonald) with a hearty "the HELL", I have to say that my absolute worst from '84 has to be To All The Girls I've Loved Before- Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson.
My mother has had an unrequited crush on Julio for years. Ergo, she loved this song. Bought the album. Played it over and over and over. It's right up there in "making me twitch" songs with I Will Survive which she also bought and played over and over and over the year she and my dad separated. *twitches just thinking about it*
1985;
Ahhh, senior year.
Favorite then: Take On Me- a-ha. No question there. I loved this song almost as much as frozen Snickers' bars.
Best now: One Night in Bangkok- Murray Head. I'm a musical theatre geek. I love Chess. I loved Chess back then. It's such a biting, cynical song. What's not to like? ETA, because I can't believe I didn't put it down is Don't You Forget About Me- Simple Minds. Should've been my senior class song. And it's one that stands the test of time.
The Worst: So much horror to choose from that I would be happy to strike from the ranks of recorded music, but the clear-cut winner for me is I Wanna Know What Love Is- Foreigner. No. No, I don't. Really, I don't. Never, ever, ever again, at least not from you guys. I'm serious now.
Here endeth my trip down memory lane.
